Customer story · Independent school · Maryland

Indian Creek School found the student nobody had reported.

A 114-acre campus, a strong community culture, and a person-down alert at 5:55 PM that mattered.

The challenge

A strong culture, with honest limits.

Indian Creek students look out for one another. Matt McCormick still recognised that culture alone cannot catch everything.

Evenings were thin

Administrative coverage ended at 6:00 PM, so incidents later in the evening carried a higher risk of going undetected.

Investigations ate the week

A single behavioural incident could take 8 to 12 hours of staff time to investigate properly.

What they did

A deliberately measured rollout.

Ben Gehle took the alerts himself first, and only widened access once the workflow was proven.

  1. Step 1

    One recipient first

Starting with limited distribution let the team judge accuracy and responsiveness without overwhelming staff.

  2. Step 2

    Match response to alert type

Security, medical and behavioural alerts each got their own response path.

  3. Step 3

    Widen to the safety network

With the system proven, access is extending to front desk, facilities and the security team.

What changed

Faster care, and better conversations.

Two incidents show what changed, in different directions.

A student reached in time

A person-down alert just before 6 PM led staff to a student whose blood sugar was dangerously low. Emergency services were called.

Praise, not just consequences

Footage of a bullying incident also showed who walked away and who looked uncomfortable, letting staff reinforce those choices.

Hours back

Investigations that once took 8 to 12 hours became a focused response measured in minutes.

In their words

Why it mattered at Indian Creek.

From the Middle School Principal, who started out sceptical.

I was the most resistant person to security technology you could imagine. Now I’m a full convert. What changed my mind was seeing how VOLT has been implemented in a culturally aware way that actually strengthens our community values.
