Campus camera monitoring with existing IP cameras

VOLT2 min read
Two smiling college students walk side by side along a sunlit brick path across a green campus quad, beneath a large oak tree and in front of a red-brick academic building.

Campuses have spent the last few years adding cameras, and the next question at the board table is how staff can make use of what those cameras see.

At its September 24, 2025 meeting, the University Affairs Committee of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees heard a campus safety update from the UNC Police chief. The minutes list expanded camera coverage among the improvements, and they record the chief's framing: “The goal isn’t just faster response—it’s prevention.” One trustee urged the university to move forward with a Live Response Center so officers can see camera feeds in real time, and the committee asked for a proposal and cost estimate by January 2026.

That conversation is familiar to some campus public safety teams. The cameras are already on the buildings, the parking decks, and the residence hall lobbies. Seeing all of them at once, on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, is a different job.

Let the cameras point to the moment

Existing IP cameras can connect over RTSP. Staff can't watch every feed at once. VOLT is built to notice moments: a fall, a possible fight, someone where they shouldn't be. A VOLT reviewer checks a moment by default before staff are notified. The alert names what was seen and where; the email and the VOLT app show the camera view.

Some days look ordinary. A student who slipped on the library steps, a shoving match outside the dining hall, or a visitor still inside an academic building after it closed are the kinds of moments VOLT can surface for staff.

It fits the plan a board is already building

None of this replaces patrol, officers, or the planning a board has asked for. It gives the people doing that work another way to notice moments, across existing IP cameras. VOLT detects possible handguns, long guns, and knives visible to the camera. The everyday moments on campus are part of the picture too.

If your team is planning how to get more from your campus cameras this year, you can request a demo.
