Swatting in Higher Education & K-12: the Rising Wave of Campus Hoaxes

Register Now

Swatting—the deliberate act of making false emergency reports to provoke a massive law enforcement response—has rapidly evolved into one of the most disruptive threats facing both universities and K-12 schools. From fake active shooter calls to bomb threats, these hoaxes exploit the reality of gun violence in America to create chaos, fear, and trauma.
This webinar, designed for chiefs of police, campus safety leaders, and school district officials, will explore:
  • The anatomy of a swatting attack—how hoaxes are scripted to maximize panic and drain resources.
  • Operational and financial impact—multi-agency responses, diverted resources, and community trauma.
  • Case studies: UTC (Higher Ed) & Ladue (K-12)—real-world lessons from both a university and a school district perspective.
  • Technology and verification—emerging tools to help distinguish false reports from genuine threats.
  • Building resilience—practical strategies for law enforcement partnerships, staff training, and community recovery.

Participants will leave with actionable insights to strengthen preparedness and response plans, ensuring that when the next call comes in—whether real or fake—their institutions are ready.

Hear Directly From Those Who've Been There

In August 2025, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was forced into lockdown during Welcome Week after a false 911 call reported an armed man with an AR-15 near the library, complete with simulated gunfire. Within hours, Villanova University received a nearly identical call during its student orientation. And in St. Louis, the Ladue School District faced a bomb threat hoax that forced the cancellation of classes while bomb-sniffing dogs and drones swept the high school campus. In each case, students ran for cover, parents feared the worst, and law enforcement poured resources into responses that ultimately revealed no real threat.
